R+W recently received a request from a world leading manufacturer of advanced test systems, looking for a top-quality coupling to be used in a special torsion test rig for heavy duty truck axles.
The Challenge: finding a reliable coupling solution for testing heavy duty truck axles.
The Solution: a BX series bellows coupling, specially designed for heavy duty applications, characterized by its compact design and the extremely smooth-running resulting from its symmetrical shape and low restoring forces under misalignment.
The Coupling: BX1/100 with Flange Connection
After careful analysis, R+W recommended the BX1/100 as the ideal solution for this application. These couplings are used in a variety of industries, including power generation, industrial processing equipment, and general mechanical engineering.
The BX1/100 model in the spotlight
The BX1/100 bellows coupling from R+W saves space with a direct flange connection on both ends. In this application it is mounted to a rotary cylinder, which actuates with a limited angular stroke of +/-50° rather than making full rotations. The dynamometer system providing the braking resistance during testing has a tremendous moment of inertia of approximately 2,350 kg-m^2 when including the coupling flange. Because of its excellent torsional stiffness characteristics, the coupling demonstrates strong resistance to changes in speed and direction under these extreme conditions.
